How to Apply Your KilgourMD Products

A step-by-step guide to getting the most from your Prevention + Treatment routine.

How to Get the Most From Your Routine

How to Use The KilgourMD System

Start with a dry or towel-dried scalp. On wash days, wash first, then apply, ideally in the evening so the serum gets the whole night to absorb.

Part your hair so you can see your scalp. The serum should land on your scalp, not your hair.

The ideal dose is a full dropper which is approximately 1 mL. If the dropper does not fill all the way, repeat to make a full dropper.

Massage with your fingertips for 30 to 60 seconds. Start where you applied the serum, then work outward in small circles. Do not rinse. Once your scalp is dry, style as usual.

Using both serums?

Either one can go first. Let the first absorb for a minute or two, then apply the second.

Frequently Asked Questions

The most important factor in seeing results from the serums is consistent, daily use. The optimal routine is whichever approach fits most naturally into your day and allows you to use them consistently—whether you apply them together or split them between morning and evening, and whether you use them on wet or dry hair or before styling.

The key is giving the products enough time to absorb properly. In our clinical studies, we allowed the products to absorb for approximately 12 hours, so we recommend avoiding showering or washing the treated area during that time.

The ideal dose is a full dropper which is approximately 1 mL. If the dropper does not fill all the way, repeat to make a full dropper.

If your current dropper is difficult to measure, you can also use a different applicator, such as a generic minoxidil applicator purchased online, as long as it allows you to accurately measure 1 mL.

Your ideal amount may vary slightly depending on your hair density. Finer hair may require less product, while thicker hair may require more to adequately cover the scalp.

The Treatment and Prevention serums were formulated by Dr. Kilgour to work together as a dual-action system. Because they target different aspects of the hair-thinning process, using both consistently is expected to provide the strongest overall results.

Prevention Serum: Focuses on creating a healthier scalp environment by supporting scalp balance, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, and helping minimize shedding.

Treatment Serum: Focuses more on supporting follicle activity and improving the appearance of hair density and fullness in areas that are already thinning.

For the most comprehensive approach, we recommend using both serums together rather than relying on just one.

The recommended amount for each serum is 1 mL per day. However, depending on your hair type and density, you may need slightly more to ensure the serum reaches and covers your entire scalp.

For fine or thin hair, 1 mL may be enough to provide full scalp coverage. With thicker or denser hair, more hair sits between the serum and your scalp, so you may need to use additional product to make sure it reaches the areas you’re targeting.

For the best coverage, part your hair into sections and apply the serum directly to the scalp, rather than applying it primarily to the hair. This helps ensure the product reaches the scalp where it’s intended to work.

The Prevention Serum contains a high concentration of vitamin C. Once the bottle is opened, exposure to oxygen can cause the vitamin C to oxidize, which may temporarily leave a yellow, orange, or reddish tint on very light, blonde, gray, or white hair.

To help neutralize the tint, we recommend using a purple-tinted shampoo regularly until the color fades.

We’re also in the process of switching the vitamin C in the Prevention Serum from ascorbic acid to a more stabilized form of vitamin C. Future versions of the Prevention Serum are expected to be less likely to cause this discoloration, including on light blonde, gray, and white hair.

Our serums are specifically formulated to be lightweight and non-greasy, so they shouldn’t leave your roots feeling or looking oily.

If you have very fine or thin hair and find that 1 mL feels like too much, it’s okay to use slightly less if that makes it easier to incorporate the serums into your daily routine. Consistency is one of the most important factors for seeing results.

For the best absorption, apply the serum directly to your scalp and gently massage it in. This can also help distribute the product evenly across the scalp.

Yes. The serums can be applied to damp, towel-dried hair or fully dry hair. Choose whichever works best with your routine, as consistency and daily use are the most important factors.

Yes, high heat does not reduce the efficacy of the serum, but Dr. Kilgour recommends using medium to low heat settings, as high heat is bad for the scalp and hair.
