Alternatives to Nutrafol

Supplements Aren’t the Answer to Hair Thinning

Looking for a Nutrafol alternative? Here’s what matters…

If your hair thinning is being caused by nutritional issues, supplements can help—but that’s only part of the picture. In many cases, thinning reflects changes at the scalp, where follicles drive hair growth. And that’s the layer supplements don’t fully address.

“Hair thinning isn’t only about genetics or bad luck. It reflects what’s happening in the scalp. When you treat it as a skincare concern—restoring strength, hydration, and balance—improvement becomes possible.”

James Kilgour, MD | Board-Certified Dermatologist

How Nutrafol Works—and What it Misses

The role of supplements for hair growth.

Nutrafol supports the internal factors that influence your hair health such as stress, hormones and nutrition. This approach can be effective if that’s your primary cause of thinning. But more often, it’s not a vitamin or mineral issue—it’s a dermatological one.

Since hair growth operates at the scalp level, it requires a skin-focused system that directly treats the hair follicles.

Nutrafol Alternatives at a Glance

Healthy hair growth depends on a healthy scalp—but not all solutions are built to support it. Some target internal factors, while others on surface-level issues. Knowing about how they work—and what they miss—is key to comparing your options.

Approach What It Does What It Misses
Viviscal (Oral Supplement) Deliver key nutrients to the body to slow hair loss. Scalp conditions that influence follicle function.
Rogaine (Minoxidil) Topical Treatment) Stimulate follicles to encourage hair growth. Scalp microbiome imbalance and follicle health.
Vegamour (Topical Serum) Deliver botanical ingredients to the follicles for reduced shedding. Dermatological-level support or advanced hair loss.
Hims & Hers (Topical + Supplement System) Provide DHT protection and follicle stimulation (contains Minoxidil). Microbial health, follicle inflammation and oil balance.

Nutrafol Alternatives: A Closer Look

Understand your options.

All hair growth systems share one goal: to support stronger, fuller hair. But that outcome depends on multiple factors: hormones, nutrition, aging and microbial balance. Each Nutrafol alternative is designed to target a different piece of that puzzle. Understanding how they compare makes it easier to choose the right system.

1. Viviscal
Viviscal is an oral supplement containing sea-derived ingredients, combined with vitamins and minerals that support keratin production—the protein associated with stronger strands. Over time, it works from within, delivering nutrients that can support the hair growth cycle, even during periods of stress or hormonal change.

But here’s the catch: supplements only make a difference when there’s a nutritional gap to fill—which isn’t usually the case. So if your diet is already reasonable, chances of improvement are low. Plus, hair growth still depends on the condition of the scalp itself. Inflammation, oil balance, and microbial activity all shape how effectively your follicles perform.

2. Rogaine (Minoxidil)

Rogaine is often the go-to solution for one reason: it tends to produce visible results—though not without some hesitation, given its reputation for causing side effects. That’s because minoxidil increases blood flow to the scalp, forcing follicles to stay active longer than they naturally would. In effect, baby hairs can grow into stronger strands with continued use.

But here’s the trade-off. It’s a forever-long commitment, so results fade once you stop. And secondly, it doesn’t address the long-term health of your follicles. That means your follicles can stay stimulated while still struggling with other triggers of hair loss—whether hormonal, age-related or otherwise.

3. Vegamour

Vegamour offers plant-based serums that support your scalp environment. Its formulas combine ingredients like red clover and curcumin to protect follicles from DHT-related stress, alongside other vegan ingredients that address inflammation and hydration. Vegamour products also extend to microbiome support—helping control sebum and calm irritation, creating more balanced conditions for growth.

Yet even with that range, plant-based systems have limits. They aren’t built with the same clinical precision as dermatological treatments. Without that level of care, results can be less predictable—especially in more complex scalp conditions or advanced hair thinning.

4. Hers

Hers has options that combine minoxidil with DHT blockers, biotin and other vitamins. DHT-targeting ingredients can help reduce stress-related shrinkage on the follicle, which prevents hair thinning. As for biotin, it’s believed to support keratin production for stronger strands, while the inclusion of vitamins can contribute to overall follicle health.

The problem with biotin and general vitamins is that they only work when your body is actually low on them. Beyond that, this system still doesn’t support the scalp environment itself by missing its microbial, structural and functional needs.

What a Dermatologist Would Recommend

“Many people experiencing hair shedding from menopause reach for surface-level solutions, but the real problem is happening deep inside the follicle. This requires targeted dermatological support. That’s why I developed a follicle-focused scalp system to restore hair growth at the root.”

Since I hit the menopause I've definitely seen my hair become thin and I can see more of the scalp. My friend recommended KilgourMD and have been using the treatment product for a couple of months now and the change has been significant. I honestly wish I had started using this years ago. Have subscribed and plan to keep using this long term
